What Are Testing Gaps?
These are features that work in basic scenarios but might have edge cases or error scenarios that haven't been tested yet. Testing gaps could hide bugs that only appear under specific conditions.
Think of it like testing a door lock - it works when you use the key normally, but what happens if you insert the key upside down? Do you get a helpful error message or does the system crash?
Endpoints Needing Additional Testing
🔐 Authentication Flows
The login system works but needs testing for:
- Brute force attacks: What happens if someone tries 100 failed logins?
- Token expiration: Do expired tokens properly refresh?
- Concurrent sessions: What if someone logs in on two devices simultaneously?
- Session hijacking: Can stolen tokens be used? (Security test)
📝 Form Submissions
Form endpoints exist but need edge case testing:
- What happens with extremely long text input?
- Special characters in field values
- Multiple rapid submissions
- Network interruption mid-submission
📊 Data Retrieval Performance
Some endpoints might be slow when returning large datasets:
- Users with thousands of entries
- Complex data with many relationships
- Filtering with multiple conditions
💾 Data Consistency
Testing what happens when multiple users modify the same data:
- Two users updating a record simultaneously
- Partial updates during network failures
- Cascading deletes (deleting a user also deletes their data)
🌍 Localization & Internationalization
The system supports different languages and regions but needs testing for:
- Date/time formatting in different timezones
- Postcode validation for different countries
- Text display with long translations
Load Testing Scenarios
These tests simulate real-world conditions with many users:
- 100 concurrent users logging in
- System behavior at peak usage times
- Database connection limits
- Memory usage under sustained load
- API response times with many simultaneous requests
Security Testing Checklist
- ☐ SQL Injection attempts - Can malicious queries break the system?
- ☐ Cross-site scripting (XSS) - Can attackers inject scripts?
- ☐ CSRF attacks - Can forged requests trick the system?
- ☐ Authorization bypass - Can users access other users' data?
- ☐ Password strength enforcement - Are weak passwords rejected?
- ☐ API rate limiting - Is there protection against spam?
Error Handling Tests
The system should handle errors gracefully:
- Database unavailable: Does the API return helpful error messages?
- Invalid input: Are validation errors clear and actionable?
- Missing required fields: Does the response explain what's missing?
- Timeout scenarios: What happens if a request takes too long?
- File upload failures: Is there feedback if upload fails?
Testing Roadmap
- Phase 1: Automated tests for edge cases (2-3 weeks)
- Phase 2: Security penetration testing (1-2 weeks)
- Phase 3: Load testing with tools like Apache JMeter (1 week)
- Phase 4: Real user acceptance testing (ongoing)
